Assignment 5 - Aninimation - History of animation part 2

GEORGE MELIES
Born on the 8th of December 1861and died on the 21st January 1938; he was a French illusionist who became famous for accidental creating the cut while filming a short horror comedy "Le Manoir du diable" (1896). Using this he made the illusion that characters would appear and disappear and even change form; this was revolutionary. His works were referenced to in and he was also portrayed as a character by Ben Kingsley in Martin Scorsese's HUGO (2011).




WILLIS O'BRIEN
Born on the 2nd of march 1886 and died on the 8th of November 1962; he was a animator who has created animation in such classics as "The Lost World" (1925) and in one of cinema's most iconic movie monsters, "King Kong" (1933). O'Brien left home at just age eleven and went on to create models and sculptures which some of were displayed at the 1913 San Francisco World's Fair when working as the assistant of the head architect, but his first role in the movies were as an animator in "The Dinosaur and the Missing Link: A Prehistoric Tragedy" (1915) for a budget of only $5,000.


RAY HARRYHAUSEN
Probably one of the biggest movie effects titans of all time, Ray Harryhausen (who actually declared Willis O'Brien to be his mentor) was born on the 29th June 1920 and died on the 7th may 2013 created some of the best special effects of his time for some the biggest and still regarded as the best movies of all time. To his name he holds such classics as  "Mighty Joe Young" (1949), "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" (1958) (which was his first coloured film), "Jason and the Argonauts" (1963) and his last film from which he retired afterwards "Clash of the Titans" (1981). He also had a small homage given to him in Disney's "Monsters Inc." (2001) 
GEORGE PAL
Was an American animator who had created a form of stop-motion with puppets which he pattered and called Pal-Doll or Puppetoons. He was born on the 1st February 1908 and died on the 2nd of may 1980; he created mini series of short films like "Jasper and the Haunted Mansion" and "Tubby the Tuber"; "Jasper and the Haunted Mansion" has actually come under attack in the past due to complaint of racism. George Pal also produced and created special effects for live action movies like "War of the Worlds" (1953).
PHIL TIPPETT
Phil Tippett is a special effects creator was born in 1951 and was inspired by Ray Harryhausen's "The 7th voyage of Sinbad" (1958) and as gone on to win an Oscar for his special effects creations in Steven Spielberg's modern classic "Jurassic Park" (1993) and has also created effects in other big films such as Star wars 4,5,6 where he did the stop-motion animation and visual effects for films like Starship Troopers (1997). Phil Tippett has also tried his hand at directing with films like Starship Troopers 2 (2004) but mostly works as an adviser now to films like the Twilight series.

THE BROTHERS QUAY
The Quay brothers are a pair of identical twins that where born on the 17th June 1947 and together they are writers, directors, cinematographers and animators and have made award winning classic film such as "The Cabinet of Jan Švankmajer" (1984) and "The Comb (From The Museums Of Sleep)" (1990). These films and others like them have always had an unusual style, blending animation with live action and they always have had dream like feel to the content.
TIM BURTON AND HENRY SELICK
Tim Burton (Born 25th August 1958) is one of todays most original and visionary filmmakers, making some of cinemas most memorable characters and story's, "Edward Scissorhands" (1990), Sweeny Todd (2009) and "Sleepy Hollow (1999). He has done live action and animation and has a tendency to work with American actor Johnny Depp; he is also married to British actress Helena Bonham Carter. He has also worked many times with Henry Selick (born 30th November 1952) who is a stop-motion animator director who has directed some of the greatest stop-motion animation films of all time, "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993) which many people confuse Tim Burton as the director but he wrote and produced it; he also directed family classic "James and the Giant Peach" (1996) which was based on the novel by Roald Dahl.

OTMAR GUTMANN
Born April 24th 1937, died October 13th 1993; even though much about Gutmann personally is unknown he was a  German television producer, animator, and director who is probably most well known for his long running BAFTA winning children's television series "Pingu" a morphing penguin who lives in the artic and speaks a made up language mixed with Swedish and English.

NICK PARK (AND ARDMAN)
Born on the 6th of December 1958, he is a English stop-motion filmmaker and winner of 3 BAFTA awards from creating the world famous "Wallace and Gromit" short films and later the feature length film "Wallace and Gromit: the curse of the ware rabbit" (2005). He is the main animator for the British animation film company Ardman which has produced such films like "Chicken Run" (2000) and has also worked with other animation companies like DreamWorks.




ADAM SHAHEEN (CUPPA COFFEE)
Adam Shaheen(born October 13th 1964)  is a British animator, producer, director and screenwriter who also the original founder of Cuppa Coffee, the oldest Canada's oldest privately owned animation studio. He is known for making animations for older audiences as they often contain adult content such as sex references, language and so on; his works are animations such as "Celebrity Deathmatch" and "Starveillance" which both won awards.
